Powell declares September Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Hunger Action Month

Powell City Council presented ZERO with a proclamation, declaring September as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed form of cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men. Everyday approximately 240,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in the United States alone – one man every 2.63 minutes and roughly 30,000 men die each year from the disease – one man every 17.52 minutes.

Additionally, City Council presented the Mid-Ohio Foodbank with a proclamation, recognizing September as Hunger Action Month in Powell.

The Mid-Ohio Foodbank distributed more than 54 million pounds of food and groceries in 2014 through its network of food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other community organizations. Food banks across the state will promote numerous events throughout the month of September to bring awareness and attention to encourage involvement in efforts to end hunger.

Members of the community can drop off non-perishable food items to the Powell Municipal Building, located at 47 Hall Street, throughout September. Drop off hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Donated food items will be donated to the Mid-Ohio Foodbank.

Zoning map amendment for The Reserve at Morris Place tabled

The developer for the proposed Reserve at Morris Place requested City Council to table indefinitely an ordinance approving a zoning map amendment for 5.37 acres at 185 North Liberty Street from City of Powell R, Residence District to City of Powell DR, Downtown Residence District.

The Reserve at Morris Place is a proposed mixed-residential subdivision and includes 39 condominium homes. The requested zoning change from residential to downtown residential is to accommodate development of condominium homes south of Adventure Park as described and recommended in the Downtown Revitalization Plan. This will also include the extension of Depot Street from Case Street to Adventure Park Drive.

Annexation tabled to next meeting

An ordinance accepting the annexation of nearly 44 acres at the southeast corner of Seldom Seen Road and Sawmill Parkway for the proposed Powell Grand development was tabled to the Sept. 15, 2015 meeting.

The Powell Grand is an active adult community and would include one, two and three bedroom apartments catered toward seniors and empty nesters.

Verona annexation moved to second reading

City Council moved an ordinance accepting the annexation of 113.59 acres from Liberty Township to the City of Powell to a second reading.

The Verona is a proposed single-family subdivision on the former site of Shamrock Golf Club along Powell Road. The site calls for 166 upscale single family homes.
