Getting around town

As an actionable step originating from the comprehensive planning process, the city is currently undertaking a new initiative: “Keep Cars Moving”

Check back mid April for more information about this new initiative

A few factors contribute to traffic in and around the City. First, Powell is situated between two high traffic areas; Polaris Mall and the Columbus Zoo. Second, similar to the larger Columbus region, traveling west-east is much more difficult than north-south in Powell. And third, Powell and surrounding Delaware County not only generate heavy amounts of traffic, but is also growing.

Given the existing conditions and future demand, Powell identified several key areas to improve.

Four Corners

As part of the comprehensive plan, several alternative proposals for the four-corners intersection were tested.

Future road network:

Through the planning process, a future road network expansion proposal was formulated as an alternative to addressing turning movements at the four-corners intersection. Expanding the road network would allow for traffic dispersal, more direct routes, and more places to turn. The map below illustrates possible routes and the connections they would make.

Regional improvements:

Several other regional roadway scale improvements are also currently planned. Many of these modifications, while not directly in Powell, can improve traffic flow in the City.

Multi-use path connections:

In addition to improving vehicular access, plans were also made to connect multi-use paths throughout (and around) the city.

Note: Locations of new connections depicted on these maps are intended to be general in nature and do not necessarily depict specific alignments. Before any new connections are advanced, they must be evaluated more thoroughly at a design detail level to ensure objectives for enhanced circulation and access management are achieved. Cross access easements may be necessary for some connections, and will require thorough study and coordination with affected property owners. This graphic provides a starting point for this analysis.
