What is a permit?
A permit is a license that allows work to be performed on a residential or commercial building. A permit is issued to the owner or the owner’s agent.

How do I get a permit?
All permits as well as helpful checklists are found on this site for both residential and commercial building by clicking the appropriate link on the Building Department page.

How long will it take to be issued a permit?
Permit applications that do not require a plan review can usually be issued immediately or the same day.  Permit applications that require review of the construction drawings will be reviewed in the order they are received and/or within 30 days.

When should I pick up my permit?
The building department will notify the applicant by fax, e-mail or U.S. mail when the permit is ready to be released.

What do I do with the permit and approved plans that the city gives to me?
The permit and approved copy of your plans should be on site for all inspections.

When can I start work on my project?
Construction work can start once the permit is issued and all fees have been paid.  Failure to obtain a permit prior to starting work can result in a stop work order and/or penalty fees.

Does my building permit include electric, heating and plumbing?
No. Each mechanical permit must be pulled separately. Commercial mechanical permits require State Licensed Contractors.

Does the City require contractors to register?
Yes. Any contractor or sub-contractor working under a permit is required to be registered with the City of Powell. This includes Liberty Township Commercial projects.

Can the City recommend a good contractor?
No. The City will not recommend any company or contractor; however, you can request a copy of contractors that are currently registered with the City.

Is it necessary to meet with the inspector for an inspection?
On a new home or building, the inspector does not need to meet with you (but it can be helpful if you choose to be there) as long as the building is open for the inspector.  However, if you call for an inspection for an occupied home or business, it is necessary for an adult to be present to meet the inspector and show the inspector the permit and the area where the improvement is located.
