Police Department Programs

PoliceAs part of the comprehensive police services provided by the department, prevention education programs are available to the general public on a daily basis.

Child Safety Seat Program:
With more than 90 percent of the child safety seats checked at Delaware General Health District events over the last five years, the Powell Police Department recognizes the need for child safety seat checks. The Delaware General Health District, Safe Kids Coalition and Powell Police Department urge parents to take advantage of this free service and let experts help ensure your children are riding in safety. These events allow parents to be sure their children’s seats are installed correctly and are free of damage and safety recalls.  Appointments are required and can be made by contacting the Delaware General Health District at 740.368.1700. Also, Liberty Township Fire Station #322 on Sawmill Parkway is a full-time inspection station that checks car and booster seats by appointment. Residents should call the station at 740.938.2022 to schedule an appointment with one of the technicians.

Citizen Police Academy:
The Powell Police Department, in an effort to more effectively engage in community policing, offers a Citizen Police Academy. This academy provides an excellent opportunity for citizens to educate themselves on not only what police officers do in their community, but also how the Powell Police Department serves the community. Graduates will be better educated on crime awareness and crime prevention while getting an "inside look" at the police department. Topics of instruction include crime prevention, crime scene investigation, criminal law, drug enforcement, traffic law, laws of arrest, use of force and OVI enforcement. Classes are held on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. for 10 consecutive weeks. The academy is open to adults and is free of charge. The next session of the Citizen Police Academy begins Wednesday, March 28. Contact Sgt. Scott Roach at 614.885.5005 for more information or to enroll.

House Watch Program:
This is a program for citizens who may be going on vacation or away from home for a few days. Prior to leaving, contact DELCOM at 614.885.3374 to advise the department of your travel plans.  While you are away, an officer will check your residence each day and provide extra patrol. If crime occurs or any safety issues are present, you will be notified. Upon returning, please contact DELCOM again and advise you are home.

Parks & Recreation Program:
Members of the police department and the City of Powell Parks and Recreation Department team up to host a canoe trip, fishing trip and other special events during the year. Please see the Parks and Recreation Program Guide for more details on upcoming programs.

Police Department Tours:
Members of the department are available, with proper notice, to give guided tours of the Powell Police Department or cruisers. On the tours, participants are given handouts such as pens, pencils, coloring books, safety tips, etc. Please contact 614.885.5005, ext. 0 for program requests.

RADkids - Self Defense for Children:Safety Camp
The RADkids program was designed to educate children in our community in an effort to reduce their risks of becoming victims of crime. This course is offered in conjunction with other local law enforcement agencies.

Although some portions of the class are physical, the children are instructed to run if physically able. However, different escape techniques are taught in case running is not an option. This is not a martial arts course; rather, it teaches participants to use what is available naturally to them.

Children are taught several principles - they should react immediately in a dangerous situation; they should resist an attack when possible; and crime scene two is always worse than crime scene one. Statistics prove that the possibility of death or serious harm is more likely if moved to another location.

Safety Camp:
Each year, the department works in conjunction with the City of Powell Parks and Recreation Department to teach preschool children about safety and how to deal with emergencies around the neighborhood. Children ride tricycles through simulated city streets. Small road signs and traffic signals are installed. Classes meet every day of the five-day session, with parents attending a graduation on the last day.

HelmutSchool Presentations:
Members of the department are available, with proper notice, to speak on a variety of police-related topics. Some of the presentations include bicycle safety, child abuse, drug abuse, personal safety and sexual assault. Please contact 614.885.5005 for any other program requests.

Touch-a-Truck:
Annually, the department works in conjunction with the Parks & Recreation Department to display a police cruiser, along with a fire engine ladder truck, city snow plow, school bus, garbage truck and other vehicles from the community. Children are encouraged to climb in, honk, touch and pretend as they learn about various vehicles from the community.
