The Powell Police Department received an international accreditation for the eighth time this week.
The agency was recognized on Saturday in California through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) as being one of the few police departments in the world (5 percent) to ensure its policies adhere to the highest standards in the profession.
CALEA® Accreditation serves as the International Gold Standard for Public Safety Agencies. This prestigious accreditation remains in effect for Powell Police Department for four years.
"The renewal of our CALEA accreditation shows our commitment to serving Powell with the highest standards possible. I couldn’t be prouder of the hard work our agency put in to achieve this monumental accomplishment," said Powell Police Chief Ron Sallows.
The process of CALEA Accreditation begins with a rigorous self-assessment, requiring a review of policies, practices, and processes against internationally accepted public safety standards. This is followed by independent assessment and feedback from the public. Structured interviews are conducted with select staff and community members to assess the agency’s effectiveness and overall service delivery capacities. The decision to accredit is rendered by a governing body of twenty-one commissioners following a public hearing and review of documentation.
CALEA Accreditation is a continuous process and serves as the foundation for a successful, well managed, transparent, community-focused public safety agency. Agencies must maintain accreditation by remaining in compliance with CALEA standards at all times. Powell Police Department goes through a re-accreditation process every four years, ensuring compliance with specific rules and guidelines.
