The City of Powell is preparing to begin construction on the Lechler Building Renovation project, a capital improvement initiative that will modernize and improve the City’s existing public service garage facility at 453 Murphy Parkway.

The project includes renovation of the existing 4,051-square-foot building and construction of a 786-square-foot addition. Planned improvements include new exterior siding and roofing, construction of a dumpster enclosure, and related site, mechanical and electrical upgrades.

Once complete, the Lechler Building will continue to be used for storage, with the addition increasing the facility’s overall capacity. The building is currently used to store snow plows and files. Snow plows will continue to be stored in the facility, while file storage will be removed so the building can be dedicated exclusively to public service operations and equipment storage.

The site will also serve as the future home of a trail connection linking Library Park to Murphy Parkway. Construction of the trail connection is not part of the Lechler Building Renovation project and will instead occur as part of the future S. Liberty Road CSX crossing project.

Powell City Council recently awarded the construction contract to 2K General Company following a competitive public bidding process. SSOE and SHYFT Design are serving as the City’s owner’s representative and architectural team for the project.

A preconstruction meeting was held May 18 with City staff, the contractor, architectural and engineering representatives, and consultants to review project coordination, construction procedures, communication protocols, scheduling and site logistics.

Construction activities are expected to begin on or shortly after May 27. The project is expected to be completed within six months.
