Recently, banners honoring Powell veterans started being displayed on utility poles throughout the City. The City joined the Hometown Heroes Veteran Banner Program which was approved by City Council at the Sept. 15 council meeting.

Banner honorees are current or former service members who live or have lived in Powell or who have another significant connection to the community. Up to 86 banners can be displayed on 43 designated City-owned utility poles.

The first banners are displayed along Olentangy Street in Downtown Powell.

Assistant City Manager and U.S. Air Force Veteran Jeffrey Tyler serves as the City liaison for the program.

“As a veteran and the son of a combat veteran, I know every banner carries a family’s story. We’re proud to honor Powell’s heroes where our community can see them,” Tyler said.

Banners will be installed during two annual windows: a week before Veterans Day through a week after and a week before Armed Forces Day through a week after Memorial Day.

Those interested in applying for a banner should fill out an application(PDF, 464KB) , provide payment, the honoree’s discharge document (DD-214) if applicable and a photograph to be included on the banner.

Applicants must submit the completed documents at Powell City Hall, 47 Hall St., at least 60 calendar days before the next display window. Applications for the window beginning on Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 15, 2027, are due Tuesday, March 16, 2027.

Once an application is received a member of the Powell Veterans Committee will collect the packet, review the application for completeness and forward it to the Delaware County Veterans Service Office (VSO). The Delaware County VSO is the county-wide program administrator and coordinates the banner production using funds provided by applicants.

City Public Service staff will install the banners during the display periods and safely store them in between display periods.

Each banner will be displayed for two consecutive years and then will be returned to the purchaser. The purchaser can alternatively apply to renew for another two-year term by notifying the Veterans Committee ahead of the next display window.
