Demolition of downtown building clears way for Scioto Street Extension
Published on April 02, 2026
The City-owned building located at 44 N. Liberty St. will be demolished from Monday, April 6 to Monday, April 20 to make way for the City of Powell to extend Scioto Street east from its current terminus at Liberty Street to Grace Drive.
The public parking lot located next to the building will be closed during this time to allow for safe demolition.
The demolition, recently approved by City Council, allows the City to begin on the first phase of construction for the Scioto Street Extension. The project will enhance traffic flow around the four corners intersection and includes construction of a large public surface parking lot that will serve businesses in the downtown area.
The lot will be accessible from Olentangy Street and the extension of Scioto Street.
The new stretch of roadway will include improved drainage systems, sidewalks, landscaping and lighting features, ensuring Downtown Powell remains walkable. A bridge or culvert will be constructed where the street will cross over Bartholomew Run.
"This is the beginning of the next chapter in Downtown Powell’s evolution,” said Jeffrey Tyler, assistant city manager. “By advancing the Scioto Street Extension and the future northeast quadrant public parking improvements, the City is making a deliberate investment in traffic circulation, walkability, and long-term downtown vitality.”
